Subject Live Cattle Data Display Priorities When Space is Constrained
Notice Date 2004-09-09
Notice Number Q2004-106
Effective Date

When Market Data Distributors’ Live Cattle data display space is limited, some have chosen to display a chronologically ordered subset (for example, the first four months of the Live Cattle contract that has eight contract months listed).  Ideally, we would prefer our distributors to display all available contract months.  However, if that is not possible, the preferred display method is by order of open interest (that is, if you can only accommodate four of eight contract months, opt to display the four with the largest open interest).  The reason for this request is that serial month contracts tend to have smaller open interest and hence, do not give an accurate picture of liquidity.

Additionally, we’d like to ask that you forward this request to any of your subscribers that might display CME data, such as in a periodical or trade newspaper, so they might display the Live Cattle data in a similar, open interest-related manner.

This suggestion arose as a result of conversations with floor traders who are also users of various distributors’ systems.
